why school is one of the few things society gets right
I feel as if the first major post of this blog sparked some serious talking points. The debate seems to have taken a turn toward talking about Eric more than organized education/schooling as a whole. I'll attempt to address the greater issue at hand as well as the specific anecdote that is Eric.
Firstly, it is my opinion that organized education quite simply works. When Eric looks at school, he sees a place where he has to multiply radicals, write analytical essays on books he feels are irrelevant to him, and talk about the differences between preterite/imperfect verb tenses. He says to himself, "I'd be much better off sleeping in, getting some breakfast and then doing a variety of activities that actually enhance my life and make me happy." But the truth is, at least how i see it, that Eric gained a solid basis for everything he knows from either school or his parents. If Eric had never stepped foot in a school, he would not have known how to positively interact with other human beings and solve problems. I think he may be forgetting some of the key principles he has learned in school or he doesn't credit school with giving him such knowledge.
Now, an arguing point to this could be that human beings are naturally inquisitive. From the very beginning of human kind, people asked themselves questions and were able to answer these after experimenting and testing things out for themselves. One could say they will do that on their own with or without school But the things we learn in school use these basic concepts in an organized fashion and ensure that every person gets an equal opporrtunity to progress. We NEED a system of organized schooling because of where modern day society puts us. It is true that there are entire cities in this country (my hometown of Atlanta's public schools for example) where schools seem to have very little affect on changing the specific society that they exist to help. The issue of inequality in schools, i think, is another issue. But the truth is that schools offer an excellent organized pathway to success. Can you potentially learn more outside of school than in it? Absolutely! But you can do whatever you want outside of school. The reasons that i hear from Eric as to his unwillingness to attend classes comes down to his lack of interest in the subject matter and his laziness at doing work he doesn't give a shit about. However, one MUST make sacrifices in order to be successful. The truth is that 99.9 % of people have to follow the society's guidelines in some shape or form. Society's guidelines state simply that if you don't have a HS diploma you are very very unlikely to succeed. Can you? maybe. But why try to get around such a simple path to success. Now this certainly does not apply to this country as a whole, as millions don't have proper health benefits and can't go to class because they have to work three jobs to support their siblings. But when you can go to New Canaan High School and know that if you at least go to class, you will have a much simpler path to success, you should take it. The only reason that I see for your not going to school is that you enjoy the lifestyle you have without it and feel like you learn more. You could continue your blacksmithing, engineering designs, and whatever else you want while also experiencing an education at high school. The only thing I can see is a combination of laziness(which I have my fair share of) and an intense anarchist view at society (which is not an entirely terrible thing, but when mishandled can lead to destruction and complete depression).
Eric, I applaud your going against the system. But that is only a good thing when it helps people. Leaving high school helps nobody including yourself, and I think you MAY regret it later. Unless you are one hundred percent certain of what you're going to do in life, school can also help you to figure that part out. Your passions can wait until you at least graduate high school. That way you have something to fall back on if needed. Not telling you what to do, because I think you're one of the brightest kids in our grade and could become one of the most successful. I just think going to school is such an important thing in one's life, even when you don't take a huge fascination in the specific subject matter covered....

I totally agree with everything Taylor said except when he tried to sneak in that bit about healthcare. (wait till next week Taylor, we will cover healthcare, i promise)
As with the Highschool Diploma, that is a question of credentials. Would a very complex, popular, and sophisticated company consider a teen who hasn't finished high school or a respected and reliable company/person who has proof behind their name?
ReplyDeleteI'll possibly expand on this later.

By the way, I would also like to expand on my communism comment later.
nice, i agree with that, except that nobody can ever be certain with what the future will entail, so that last part was false. but otherwise i have no beef
ReplyDeleteeric, your a fucking idiot. I hate school as much if not more than you do. I havent handed in a homework assignment in 6 weeks and am failing 3 classes, but at least im in college, at least i bullshitted my way through the system enough to have the choice to achieve or not achieve in life. no one will buy your weapon design. people who get weapons systems passed are military engineers and college educated students. the thought of you being a wealthy new canaan resident and not attending at least ncc is absurd, but not finishing highschool is straight up dumb as fuck. i used to listen to your crazy ideas of becoming a mercenary without spec ops training, etc, and think maybe you were bright and just didnt know how the system actually worked, but watching you decide the rest of your life at 16 shows me that you are straight up immature. I may not graduate college because i dont give a fuck, but at least i got here and attended. dumb fucking hick ass bitches in Arkansas will be ahead of you in life because will have acheived a basic task that you were too weak/ pussy to tackle. just dont do this to yourself. -Conor
ReplyDeleteThats my point Conor, you dont need to bullshit your way through the system, i know your smart, your not failing b.c you dont know the stuff, its just b.c its boring as shit. Your smart enough to succeed without bullshitting your way through.
ReplyDeleteSecond, ill link the article at the end but DARPA accepted a design for a new combat vehicle from a civilian, this is the article before hand, about the idea you can find one about who won, etc. with a quick google search.
Last, if i do decide to become a PMC, i will of course get spec ops training, you have to have it, but there are non contractual organizations that make it easier to do so.

Eric, as much as you are my friend, you are probally the biggest dumb fuck i have ever met. but you have no motivation, you provide us with shits and giggles and you have great ideas, but none of them ever ended up being finished, and what is this shit about a weapon....? no, i am going to give you a week, to pick yourself back and dust off, but once that week is over, count me out. From what i have herd in the time you have been out of school you have 1) chopped down a fucking tree 2) had a bonfire 3) made some imaginary weapon that probably shoots fucking juice out of the end for all we know. when i read these all i see is a cry for attention, and now that you have it, congrats, you are officially headed nowhere in life. Before i was happy to consider you a friend, but now, you have dropped out and sit on your ass and plead that school is a waste of your time. well it is not. Eric, you have one week until you can choose to pick off where you left off, but after that, expect no help. I think i speak for alot of people when i say this, but if you arent one of them, well then you arent, but im tired of the bullshit and im not waiting for you, i need to keep moving. you are smarter than you think, but by doing this you make me think that you have an iq of 5. you could go places, but as of right now you are headed to work at the nearest mobile mart. I mean it when i say one week, choose, and i hope you pick the right one.

ok, i know there are loopholes for every situation, and yes it is completely because, like you, i dont give a fuck and dont do the work because i deem it to be pointless. just dont discredit school for building you into the person you have become and giving you the ability to act sociably with your peers. regardless, finish school. if you dont your kids will probably think their dads retarded, oh, and no one will marry you except maybe a large black chick from compton-conor
ReplyDeleteJust sayn all the ads down at the bottom are for earning a high school diploma......could it be a sign....-harry
ReplyDeletenothing wrong with a large black chick ^
ReplyDeletethere we go harry
ReplyDeleteok so not a cry for attention, this just happens to be the topic this week, next week we are going to tackle healthcare, maybe it wasnt the best topic to start on, but w.e nbd.
ReplyDeleteso i dont really want kids, i hate them, if i have the kind of relationship with my kid that i have with my parents i dont want to put them through that.
finally, the ads are based on the content, if we started talking about sports, there would be sport ads, so not a sign
Love Harry's comment
ReplyDeleteAlso, it has come to my attention that you seem to be viewing this whole thing as a complete joke... some history debate where the point isn't to fight for what you know is right but simply to not back down from something you've put so much effort into. Such is the nature of the human beings. If in fact high school were giving you nothing... how in hell are you able to comprehensively think up counter arguments, create blogs, link articles, and gain any basic knowledge whatsoever for this "weapon" you've created?
Human nature. Think about it.
You deleted my comment. Why is that Eric? I'll tell you why, it's because you hate anyone who doesn't kowtow to your every order, it's because I actually pointed out every legitimate flaw in your style of life. Why? Why do spit in the faces of your parrents? I mean you can rebel against the system, but hypocritically, you manipulate your parrents by going along with it to make them happy enough to reward you, then you scream at them and claim to be a justified, persecuted revolutionary. You manipulate people's compassion to succeed, and yes, you do have potential but you should be able to tell that you can't stomp on people forever to succeed, especially when everyone in this blog is telling you they've had enough. This is a legitimate counterpoint to your beliefs and therefore has the righ to be part of the discussion. If you delete this, you are a coward who can't accept deffeat since you cannot create a counterpoint. And don't deny that this is how you function because it is.

James i did not delete your comment, for some reason longer comments are automatically deleted, you can ask charles, it happened to him originally, however it does show up in my email, and if you would like i will make it a full post, i would also like to make the above comment part of said post so i can properly address what you have put forth.
ReplyDeletefinally, please remember, despite how it turned out this wasnt about me specifically just a discussion on a topic where i used myself as an example.
Well then, I am merely rebutting your example and pointing out its flaws. And perhaps I did get a little personal with that last post. It's you choice whether or not you repost it.

So I'm feeling your just the typical New Canaan kid. Your a spoiled little brat. Let me guess the house you live in, the clothes you wear, the food you eat, its all paid by you parents. What will happen when they remove you little life line, your whole "plan" will come crashing down. You will fail at life, i hate to break it to you, but the truth has to be heard
ReplyDeleteMaier... you leave me speechless in a very bad way and stop posting this on facebook, no one wants to read it or be bothered.
